Under the Shining Face of God

Introduction: More Than a Beautiful Closing Prayer

Numbers 6:24-26 is one of the most loved blessings in the Bible. Many people know these words because they are often spoken at the end of a church service, a wedding, a funeral, or a time of prayer. But this blessing is much more than a familiar religious phrase. It is a revelation of God’s heart toward His covenant people.

This blessing is often called the Aaronic Blessing or the Priestly Blessing, because God gave it to Moses and commanded Aaron and his sons, the priests, to speak it over Israel. The blessing did not originate in man’s emotion or tradition. It came from God Himself.

“The LORD bless you and keep you; The LORD make His face shine upon you, And be gracious to you; The LORD lift up His countenance upon you, And give you peace.”
Numbers 6:24-26 NKJV

These words show us that God does not merely give commands to His people. He also places His blessing over them. He does not only tell them how to walk. He promises to be with them as they walk.

Historical Background: Israel in the Wilderness

The book of Numbers takes place after God delivered Israel from slavery in Egypt. They had passed through the Red Sea, received the Law at Mount Sinai, and were being prepared to journey through the wilderness toward the Promised Land.

The wilderness was a place of testing. Israel had no permanent homes, no settled farms, and no visible human security. They had to depend daily on the Lord for food, water, direction, protection, and mercy.

It is in this wilderness setting that God gave this blessing. That is important. Before Israel faced enemies, hunger, thirst, fear, and uncertainty, God placed His Name and His favour upon them.

This teaches us a powerful truth: the blessing of God does not mean we will never walk through difficult places. It means we do not walk through them uncovered, abandoned, or alone.

The Priests Were Speaking God’s Words

In Numbers 6, the priests were not told to invent their own blessing. God gave them the exact pattern of blessing to speak over the people.

And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying: “Speak to Aaron and his sons, saying, ‘This is the way you shall bless the children of Israel. Say to them:'”

The words “This is the way” show us that this blessing was divinely designed. The priests were not merely expressing good wishes. They were declaring God’s covenant intention over His people.

In the Old Covenant, the priests stood before God on behalf of the people. They offered sacrifices, taught the Law, and pronounced blessing. In the New Covenant, Jesus is our great High Priest. Through Him we receive the fullness of God’s grace, favour, and peace.

Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.

1. The LORD Bless You

The blessing begins with the Lord Himself. It does not say, “May circumstances bless you,” or “May people bless you,” or “May your own strength bless you.” It says, “The LORD bless you.”

True blessing begins with God. In Scripture, blessing is more than money, comfort, or success. Biblical blessing includes God’s favour, presence, protection, provision, fruitfulness, strength, wisdom, and covenant goodness.

Many people think they are blessed only when life is easy. But in the Bible, a blessed person is not someone who has no battles. A blessed person is someone upon whom God has placed His favour.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ.
Ephesians 1:3 NKJV

For the believer, the deepest blessing is found in Christ. We are not trying to earn God’s blessing by our own strength. Through Jesus, we have been brought into the blessing of God and now learn to walk in it by faith.

2. And Keep You

“The LORD bless you and keep you…”

To be kept by God means to be guarded, preserved, watched over, and protected. Israel needed this in the wilderness. They faced enemies, dangers, temptations, hunger, fear, and their own unbelief.

We also need the keeping power of God. We need Him to keep our hearts, our minds, our families, our faith, our thoughts, and our steps.

God’s keeping does not mean that trouble will never come. It means trouble does not have the final word. The Lord watches over His people and preserves what belongs to Him.

The LORD shall preserve you from all evil; He shall preserve your soul. The LORD shall preserve your going out and your coming in From this time forth, and even forevermore.
Psalm 121:7-8 NKJV

This is a great comfort. We are not strong enough to keep ourselves, but God is faithful to keep His people.

3. The LORD Make His Face Shine Upon You

In Hebrew thought, the face represented presence, attention, relationship, and favour. For God’s face to shine upon someone means His favour is turned toward them.

This is a very tender picture. Think of a loving parent smiling over a child. That smile communicates acceptance, delight, warmth, and nearness. In a far greater way, this blessing speaks of God’s gracious attention toward His people.

The opposite of this would be God hiding His face, which often speaks of judgment, distance, or displeasure. But here the prayer is that God’s face would shine upon His people. His presence would not be dark toward them, but bright with favour.

God be merciful to us and bless us, And cause His face to shine upon us.
Psalm 67:1 NKJV

For Christians, this becomes even more beautiful in Jesus Christ. Jesus reveals the face and heart of the Father. In Him, the light of God’s grace has shone into our hearts.

For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

4. And Be Gracious to You

Grace is God’s undeserved favour, kindness, mercy, and help. Israel needed grace because they were not a perfect people. They complained, doubted, feared, rebelled, and often failed.

Yet God still gave a blessing that included grace. This shows us that the blessing of God is not based on human perfection. It is rooted in His covenant faithfulness.

We also need grace every day. We need grace to be forgiven, grace to stand, grace to change, grace to endure, grace to forgive others, and grace to obey God.

Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
Hebrews 4:16 NKJV

Grace is not permission to live carelessly. Grace is God’s power and kindness that draws us near, lifts us up, and teaches us to walk in His ways.

5. The LORD Lift Up His Countenance Upon You

“The LORD lift up His countenance upon you…”

This phrase is closely connected to the idea of God’s face. To lift up the countenance means to turn toward someone with attention, favour, and care.

It gives the picture of God not ignoring His people, not turning away from them, and not treating them as forgotten. He turns His attention toward them.

This is deeply personal. God is not distant, cold, or uninterested. He sees His people. He knows their needs. He hears their cries. He turns toward them with covenant love.

The eyes of the LORD are on the righteous, And His ears are open to their cry.
Psalm 34:15 NKJV

For the believer, this brings comfort. We may feel unseen by people, but we are never unseen by God.

6. And Give You Peace

“The LORD lift up His countenance upon you, And give you peace.”
Numbers 6:26 NKJV

The Hebrew word for peace is shalom. It means more than the absence of conflict. It carries the idea of wholeness, completeness, wellbeing, safety, harmony, restoration, and life as God intended it to be.

This is the climax of the blessing. God blesses, keeps, shines upon, shows grace, turns His face toward His people, and gives peace.

Peace is not merely a feeling. It flows from being rightly related to God. The greatest peace we can ever receive is peace with God through Jesus Christ.

Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Romans 5:1 NKJV

Jesus does not only give peace. He Himself is our peace. The world tries to give peace by changing circumstances, but Christ gives peace by reconciling us to God and ruling in our hearts.

Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
John 14:27 NKJV

The LORD Places His Name Upon His People

After the blessing, God gives a remarkable explanation:

“So they shall put My name on the children of Israel, and I will bless them.”
Numbers 6:27 NKJV

This means the blessing was connected to God’s Name. In many English Bibles, the word LORD in capital letters represents God’s covenant Name. This blessing was not general religious encouragement. It was covenant language.

To have God’s Name placed upon them meant that Israel belonged to Him. They were marked by His covenant, His authority, His presence, and His favour.

In the New Covenant, believers also belong to God. We are called by His Name, redeemed by the blood of Jesus, sealed by the Holy Spirit, and identified with Christ.

But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.
1 Peter 2:9 NKJV

A Beautiful Historical Note

The Aaronic Blessing is one of the oldest known biblical blessings. In 1979, small silver scrolls were discovered near Jerusalem containing words from Numbers 6:24-26. These are often connected with the First Temple period and are among the oldest known surviving texts containing Scripture.

This reminds us that these words have been treasured by God’s people for thousands of years. Generations have heard them, prayed them, sung them, and received them as a reminder of the Lord’s covenant care.

But the power of the blessing is not in the age of the words. The power is in the God who spoke them.

How This Blessing Points to Christ

Numbers 6 was first given to Israel under the Old Covenant, but the heart of this blessing is fulfilled beautifully in Jesus Christ.

In Christ, we are blessed with every spiritual blessing. In Christ, we are kept by the power of God. In Christ, the face of God shines upon us. In Christ, we receive grace upon grace. In Christ, God turns toward us in mercy. In Christ, we receive peace with God and the peace of God.

And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace.
John 1:16 NKJV

This blessing is not a magic formula. It is a declaration of who God is and what He gives to His people. It teaches us to live under His favour, depend on His protection, seek His face, receive His grace, and walk in His peace.

Practical Application

1. Receive God’s Blessing by Faith

Many believers struggle to receive from God because they feel unworthy. But God’s blessing is not earned by human perfection. It is received through faith in His grace and goodness.

2. Trust God to Keep You

Life is uncertain, but God is faithful. Ask Him to keep your heart, your family, your faith, your mind, your decisions, and your steps.

3. Seek His Face, Not Only His Hand

It is right to ask God for provision, help, and breakthrough. But the greatest blessing is not only what God gives. The greatest blessing is God Himself.

4. Live as Someone Who Carries His Name

If we belong to God, our lives should reflect Him. His Name upon us is both a privilege and a responsibility. We represent the One who has blessed us.

5. Walk in His Peace

Peace is not found in perfect circumstances. Peace is found in being near to God, trusting His Word, and resting in Christ.

Closing Encouragement

Numbers 6:24-26 is more than a closing prayer. It is a powerful reminder of God’s covenant heart. He is the God who blesses, keeps, shines upon, shows grace, turns toward, and gives peace.

Israel needed this blessing in the wilderness. We need it in our daily walk with God. Whatever season we are in, we can remember this truth: God’s people are not abandoned, forgotten, or uncovered. The Lord Himself blesses and keeps them.
