Many people understand what we are saved from, but Ephesians 2 also reveals what we are saved for. We are saved from sin, death, condemnation, and separation from God, but salvation does not end there. God saves us, makes us alive with Christ, brings us near to Himself, gives us a new identity, and then calls us to walk in the good works He has prepared for us. The key verse is Ephesians 2:10:
“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.”
Ephesians 2:10 NKJV
We Were Dead, but God Made Us Alive
Ephesians 2 begins by reminding us where we came from. Before Christ, we were spiritually dead in trespasses and sins. We followed the course of this world, lived according to the desires of the flesh, and were by nature children of wrath. Paul does not begin by telling us that we were merely weak, confused, or in need of improvement. He says we were dead and needed God to give us life.
“And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins.”
Ephesians 2:1 NKJV
Then come two of the most powerful words in Scripture: “But God.” Our salvation did not begin with our goodness, our effort, or our ability to change ourselves. It began with the mercy and love of God.
“But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us… made us alive together with Christ.”
Ephesians 2:4–5 NKJV
We Are Saved by Grace
Paul makes it unmistakably clear that salvation is not something we earn. We are saved by grace through faith. It is the gift of God. No one can boast before God and say, “I saved myself,” because salvation is entirely the result of His grace.
“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.”
Ephesians 2:8–9 NKJV
But verse 9 must never be separated from verse 10. We are not saved by good works, but we are certainly saved for good works. Good works are not the root of salvation; they are the fruit of salvation. We do not work to become saved. We work because God has saved us and made us new in Christ.
We Are His Workmanship
The word “workmanship” speaks of something made, formed, or created by God. The Christian is not a self-made person. We are God’s workmanship. He has taken those who were spiritually dead and made them alive. He has taken those who were far from Him and brought them near. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus for a purpose.
“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works.”
Ephesians 2:10 NKJV
This means your salvation has purpose. God did not save you merely so that you could escape judgment and one day enter heaven. He saved you so that your life could now display His grace, His character, His love, and His works in this world.
God Prepared a Walk for Us
Ephesians 2:10 does not merely say that God wants us occasionally to do something good. It says that He prepared good works beforehand “that we should walk in them.” This speaks of a way of life. The same chapter that begins with us walking according to the course of this world now ends with us walking in the works God has prepared for us.
Before Christ, we walked according to the world. In Christ, we are called to walk according to God’s purpose. Salvation changes both our destination and our direction.
We Were Far Away, but Christ Brought Us Near
The second half of Ephesians 2 expands the picture. Paul reminds the Gentile believers that they were once “without Christ,” strangers to the covenants of promise, “having no hope and without God in the world.” But through the blood of Jesus, those who were far away have been brought near.
“But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.”
Ephesians 2:13 NKJV
Jesus is our peace. Through the cross, He reconciles us to God and also breaks down the walls of separation between people. Salvation brings us into a new relationship with God and into a new family of believers.
We Are No Longer Strangers
Ephesians 2 ends with an extraordinary picture of who we have become. We are no longer strangers and foreigners. We are fellow citizens with the saints, members of God’s household, and part of a holy temple in which God dwells by His Spirit.
“Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God.”
Ephesians 2:19 NKJV
The chapter therefore gives us the full story of salvation: we were dead, but God made us alive; we were under wrath, but God showed us mercy; we were far away, but Christ brought us near; we were strangers, but now we belong to God’s household; and we were walking according to this world, but now we are called to walk in the good works God prepared for us.
Why Are We Saved?
We are saved because of God’s great love and mercy. We are saved by grace through faith. We are saved from sin and spiritual death. We are saved to be brought near to God, to become part of His family, to become His dwelling place, and to walk in the good works He prepared for us.
You were not saved to remain as you were. You are His workmanship. You have been created anew in Christ Jesus. God has a new walk for you, a new purpose for you, and works prepared for you. The question is no longer only, “What have I been saved from?” The question is also, “What has God saved me for?”
“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.”
Ephesians 2:10 NKJV
