The Immutability of God

The word immutability means the quality of being unchangeable, constant, permanent, and unable to be altered over time.

In theology, the immutability of God refers to the biblical truth that God does not change in His nature, character, purpose, will, or promises. He remains the same forever — perfect, holy, faithful, righteous, merciful, and true.

Unlike creation, God is not subject to growth, decline, improvement, weakness, ageing, or uncertainty. Everything around us changes, but God remains eternally the same.

God Is Our Unchanging Rock

The Bible often compares God to a Rock. A rock speaks of stability, strength, firmness, and security. While the waves of the sea move and crash around it, the rock remains firm.

In the same way, all creation changes, but God does not.

“He is the Rock, His work is perfect;
For all His ways are justice,
A God of truth and without injustice;
Righteous and upright is He.”
Deuteronomy 32:4 NKJV

God has no beginning and no ending. Therefore, He cannot improve, deteriorate, or become something different from what He has always been. He is eternal, perfect, and unchanging.

“Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.”
James 1:16–17 NKJV

With God there is no “shadow of turning”. He does not shift. He does not change direction. His light does not flicker. His truth does not evolve with the culture of the day.

1. God Is Unchangeable in His Essence

God is unchangeable in His very being. There was never a time when He did not exist, and there will never be a time when He will cease to exist.

God has not evolved, grown, aged, weakened, or improved. He is already perfect. Therefore, He cannot change for the better. And because He is perfect, He cannot change for the worse.

“For I am the LORD, I do not change.”
Malachi 3:6 NKJV

This is God’s own declaration. He does not change.

When God revealed Himself to Moses, He said:

“I AM WHO I AM.”
Exodus 3:14 NKJV

God alone can say this. He is not becoming. He simply is. He is self-existent, eternal, and complete in Himself.

Time does not weaken Him. Human culture does not influence Him. The opinions of men do not alter Him. His power never diminishes, His wisdom never fails, and His glory never fades.

2. God Is Unchangeable in His Attributes

God’s attributes are His perfect qualities. He is holy, righteous, loving, merciful, truthful, faithful, wise, and powerful.

Whatever God was before creation, He still is today, and He will remain the same forever.

His holiness has not become less holy.
His power has not become weaker.
His wisdom has not become outdated.
His love has not become unstable.
His truth has not changed with the times.

“Forever, O LORD, Your word is settled in heaven.”
Psalm 119:89 NKJV

God’s Word is not temporary. It is settled in heaven. What God has spoken remains true.

His love is also unchanging:

“Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love;
Therefore with lovingkindness I have drawn you.”
Jeremiah 31:3 NKJV

His mercy and truth endure through every generation:

“For the LORD is good;
His mercy is everlasting,
And His truth endures to all generations.”
Psalm 100:5 NKJV

This is a great comfort to the believer. God’s love is not like human love, which may be strong today and cold tomorrow. His mercy is not unstable. His truth is not seasonal. His faithfulness does not expire.

3. God Is Unchangeable in His Counsel

God is also unchangeable in His counsel, purpose, and will.

Human beings often change their minds because they lack knowledge, make mistakes, or do not have the power to carry out their plans. But God is all-knowing and all-powerful. He never needs to revise His decisions.

“The counsel of the LORD stands forever,
The plans of His heart to all generations.”
Psalm 33:11 NKJV

Some may ask: “But does the Bible not say that God repented or was sorry?”

For example:

“And the LORD was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart.”
Genesis 6:6 NKJV

This does not mean that God made a mistake or changed His eternal nature. Scripture does not contradict itself. The Bible also says:

“God is not a man, that He should lie,
Nor a son of man, that He should repent.
Has He said, and will He not do?
Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?”
Numbers 23:19 NKJV

And again:

“And also the Strength of Israel will not lie nor relent. For He is not a man, that He should relent.”
1 Samuel 15:29 NKJV

When the Bible speaks of God “repenting” or being “sorry”, it is using language that helps us understand God’s dealings with mankind from our human point of view.

The Bible also speaks of God’s eyes, hands, ears, and arms, yet God is Spirit. It speaks of God “waking”, yet He never sleeps.

“Then the Lord awoke as from sleep,
Like a mighty man who shouts because of wine.”
Psalm 78:65 NKJV

Yet another Scripture says:

“Behold, He who keeps Israel
Shall neither slumber nor sleep.”
Psalm 121:4 NKJV

So when God changes His dealings with people, Scripture may describe it in human language as “relenting” or “repenting”. But God’s eternal purpose, character, and holiness remain unchanged.

“For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.”
Romans 11:29 NKJV

“But He is unique, and who can make Him change?
And whatever His soul desires, that He does.”
Job 23:13 NKJV

God’s purpose is fixed. His counsel is sure. His will does not fluctuate.

A Changing World and an Unchanging God

Everything around us changes.

People change.
Feelings change.
Governments change.
Friendships change.
Health changes.
Finances change.
Cultures change.
Even our own hearts can be unstable.

But God does not change.

This shows us the great difference between the Creator and the creature. We are dependent. We are fragile. We are here today and gone tomorrow. Every breath we take is received from God.

“Who keeps our soul among the living,
And does not allow our feet to be moved.”
Psalm 66:9 NKJV

The Apostle Paul said:

“For in Him we live and move and have our being.”
Acts 17:28 NKJV

We do not sustain ourselves. God sustains us. Without Him, we are nothing.

Fallen Man Is Unstable

Because of sin, mankind is not only changeable but also naturally opposed to God. The fallen human heart is restless, unstable, and unreliable.

The Bible describes the wicked as troubled waters:

“But the wicked are like the troubled sea,
When it cannot rest,
Whose waters cast up mire and dirt.”
Isaiah 57:20 NKJV

Jacob said of Reuben:

“Unstable as water, you shall not excel.”
Genesis 49:4 NKJV

This is a fitting description of fallen human nature. Man can be passionate today and cold tomorrow. Loyal today and false tomorrow. Praising today and rejecting tomorrow.

The same crowds who cried, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” later cried, “Crucify Him!”

This is why Scripture warns us not to put our ultimate trust in man:

“Do not put your trust in princes,
Nor in a son of man, in whom there is no help.”
Psalm 146:3 NKJV

And again:

“Sever yourselves from such a man,
Whose breath is in his nostrils;
For of what account is he?”
Isaiah 2:22 NKJV

Human beings are not a safe foundation. God alone is.

Where Can We Fix Our Feet?

Here is great comfort: although human nature cannot be fully relied upon, God can.

My emotions may change.
My circumstances may change.
My friends may disappoint me.
My own strength may fail.
But God does not change.

If God changed as we do, how could we trust Him? If He promised one thing today and withdrew it tomorrow, how could we have assurance? If His love depended on moods, how could we rest in Him?

But praise be to His glorious Name — He is always the same.

His purpose is fixed.
His will is stable.
His Word is sure.
His promises are trustworthy.

Here is the Rock on which we may fix our feet while everything else around us is being swept away.

“For the mountains shall depart
And the hills be removed,
But My kindness shall not depart from you,
Nor shall My covenant of peace be removed,”
Says the LORD, who has mercy on you.
Isaiah 54:10 NKJV

Because God does not change, His promises will not fail.

The Immutability of God Encourages Prayer

Some may ask: “If God’s will is already fixed, why should we pray?”

The answer is simple: because God commands us to pray, and He has ordained prayer as the means through which many of His blessings are received.

Prayer is not an attempt to change God into someone more willing. Prayer is coming to the unchanging God in faith, surrender, and obedience.

“Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.”
1 John 5:14 NKJV

True prayer seeks God’s will, not rebellion against it. To ask for what is contrary to God’s will is not true prayer; it is self-will dressed in religious language.

But when we pray according to His will, we may have confidence. The God who hears us is faithful, constant, and good.

The Immutability of God Is a Warning to the Wicked

The immutability of God is a great comfort to believers, but it is also a solemn warning to those who continue in sin.

God’s holiness does not change.
His hatred of sin does not change.
His justice does not change.
His warnings do not change.

Those who reject God, defy His commandments, ignore His glory, and live as though He does not exist must not imagine that God will one day become less holy or less just.

“Therefore I also will act in fury. My eye will not spare nor will I have pity; and though they cry in My ears with a loud voice, I will not hear them.”
Ezekiel 8:18 NKJV

God will not deny Himself in order to satisfy man’s rebellion. He is holy — unchangingly holy. Therefore, He hates sin — eternally hates it.

The same unchanging God who fulfils His promises will also fulfil His warnings.

This is why sinners must not delay repentance. God’s mercy is real, but it must not be presumed upon. His grace is abundant, but it must not be treated lightly.

The Light and Dark Side of God’s Immutability

The immutability of God is like the cloud that stood between Israel and the Egyptians. To Israel, it brought light and protection. To Egypt, it brought darkness and judgment.

So it is with the unchanging nature of God.

To the believer, God’s immutability is comfort, peace, and assurance.
To the unrepentant sinner, it is a fearful warning.

It guarantees the fulfilment of His promises, but also the execution of His judgments. God will not change His Word to accommodate human rebellion. He will not become less holy, less truthful, or less just.

The guilty may hope that God will be more lenient than His Word declares, but such hope is false. God is unchanging in truth, faithfulness, justice, holiness, and purpose.

Conclusion: Only God Is Holy

The doctrine of God’s immutability should lead us to worship, humility, trust, and holy fear.

We live in a changing world, among changing people, with changing circumstances and changing emotions. But our God remains the same.

He is the eternal Rock.
He is perfect in all His ways.
He is faithful to His promises.
He is holy in all His judgments.
He is constant in His love.
He is unchanging in His truth.

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.”
Hebrews 13:8 NKJV

Therefore, let us fix our feet upon the Rock that cannot move.

God does not change.
His Word does not fail.
His promises are sure.
His holiness is eternal.
His mercy is everlasting.
His truth endures to all generations.

Only God is holy.
