Theme: Who We Are in ChristOne of the greatest battles in the Christian life is the battle of identity. Many believers know what they have done wrong, what they struggle with, and what others have called them, but they do not always know who God says they are in Christ. The enemy often attacks our identity because if he can confuse who we are, he can weaken how we live.
But Scripture does not leave us confused. In 1 Peter 2:9, God gives us a powerful description of our new identity in Christ.
“But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.”
1 Peter 2:9 NKJV
This verse is not merely a religious compliment. It is a declaration from God over His people. It tells us who we are, why we belong to Him, and what we are called to do.
1. We Are Chosen by God
Peter begins with the words, “But you are a chosen generation.” This means our identity starts with God’s choice, not our performance. We did not earn our way into God’s family. We were chosen by His grace, loved by His heart, and brought near through Jesus Christ.
To be chosen means we are not accidents in the kingdom of God. We are not unwanted, forgotten, or invisible. In Christ, we are people whom God has called, received, and made His own.
“Just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love.”
Ephesians 1:4 NKJV
This gives us security. The Christian life is not based on trying to convince God to love us. It begins with the truth that He already loved us, chose us, and brought us to Himself through Christ.
2. We Are a Royal Priesthood
Peter then says we are “a royal priesthood.” This is a remarkable identity. Under the Old Covenant, kings and priests had separate roles. Kings represented authority and rule. Priests represented worship, sacrifice, and access to God. But in Christ, believers are called both royal and priestly.
We are royal because we belong to the King. We are priests because we have access to God and are called to worship Him. We no longer stand far away from His presence. Through Jesus, we can come boldly to the Father.
“To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood, and has made us kings and priests to His God and Father, to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.”
Revelation 1:5–6 NKJV
This means we do not live as spiritual beggars. We live as sons and daughters of the King. We do not approach God as strangers. We come as worshippers who have been cleansed by the blood of Jesus.
3. We Are a Holy Nation
The verse continues by calling us “a holy nation.” The word holy means set apart for God. Holiness is not first about looking religious; it is about belonging completely to the Lord.
In Christ, we have been separated from the old life and brought into a new one. We are no longer defined by darkness, sin, shame, fear, or the ways of the world. God has set us apart for Himself.
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.”
2 Corinthians 5:17 NKJV
This is important because many believers try to become new by their own effort. But Scripture says that in Christ, we already are a new creation. Our holy living flows from our holy identity. We live differently because we belong to God.
4. We Are His Own Special People
Peter also says we are “His own special people.” This means we are God’s possession, His treasure, His people who belong personally to Him. Our value is not determined by the world’s opinion, our past failures, our emotions, or our achievements. Our value is determined by the One who bought us with the blood of Christ.
“For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.”
1 Corinthians 6:20 NKJV
To belong to God is both a comfort and a calling. It comforts us because we are secure in His hands. It calls us because our lives are no longer our own. We now live for the One who saved us.
5. We Have Been Called Out of Darkness
Peter reminds us that God “called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.” This shows us where we came from and where we are now. Before Christ, we were in darkness. Darkness speaks of sin, blindness, confusion, fear, and separation from God. But God did not leave us there. He called us out.
“He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love.”
Colossians 1:13 NKJV
Salvation is not only forgiveness from sin; it is a transfer of kingdoms. We have been brought out of darkness and into the light of Christ. We are not who we used to be. We do not belong where we used to belong. We now walk in the light because we belong to the Lord.
6. We Are Called to Proclaim His Praises
Our identity also gives us purpose. Peter says we are chosen, royal, holy, and God’s own people “that you may proclaim the praises of Him.” God saved us so that our lives would display His goodness.
To proclaim His praises is more than singing songs in church. It means our words, choices, testimony, worship, obedience, and character should declare who God is. Our lives should say, “Look what the Lord has done.”
“Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, whom He has redeemed from the hand of the enemy.”
Psalm 107:2 NKJV
When we understand who we are in Christ, praise becomes natural. We do not praise God only because life is easy. We praise Him because He has chosen us, saved us, cleansed us, called us, and brought us into His marvelous light.
Practical Application
First, we must stop agreeing with false identities. We are not rejected, worthless, defeated, forgotten, or trapped in our past. In Christ, we are chosen by God.
Second, we must live from access, not distance. We are a royal priesthood. We can come to God in prayer, worship, repentance, and faith because Jesus has opened the way.
Third, we must live as people set apart. We are a holy nation. Our values, speech, relationships, and decisions should reflect that we belong to God.
Fourth, we must proclaim His praise. Our testimony matters. The same God who called us out of darkness can call others out of darkness too.
Conclusion
1 Peter 2:9 is a powerful reminder that our identity is not built on our past, our feelings, our failures, or the opinions of others. Our identity is built on what God has said about us in Christ.
We are chosen. We are royal. We are holy. We belong to God. We have been called out of darkness into His marvelous light. Therefore, our lives should proclaim His praise.
“But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.”
